HyStarter II: Region Neubrandenburg/MSE

About the region

The Mecklenburg Lake District (Landkreis Mecklenburgische Seenplatte), with the four-gate city of Neubrandenburg as its main centre, is the largest district in Germany in terms of area, with around 280,000 inhabitants. One is always close to the water here. The magnificent landscape of lakes, boasting over 1,000 lakes, is strongly characterised by tourism as well as various small and medium-sized enterprises. Due to its expansive flat landscape structures, the district has been an important national production location for renewable energies for decades, both from wind power and from solar and bioenergy. Hydrogen can make a significant contribution to the region’s ambitious climate protection efforts and the storage of electricity from renewable energy sources. This makes hydrogen the central point and connecting element between the electricity, heating and mobility sectors.

Hydrogen mission of the region

  • Development of a district-wide hydrogen infrastructure with self-sufficient energy solutions
  • Green hydrogen production from existing local wind & solar parks in the Mecklenburg Lake District
  • Creation of green commercial & residential areas
  • Hydrogen production for local and regional mobility in the district
  • Hydrogen & tourism; impulses for inland shipping in the lake district
